The Purification System Box: Your Gateway to Ultra-Pure Environments

What Exactly is a Purification System Box?

Imagine you're working with a powder that reacts violently with moisture in the air - maybe it's a lithium battery cathode material, a nano-catalyst, or a hygroscopic pharmaceutical intermediate. Just a few ppm of water vapor can ruin your entire batch. That's where a purification system box comes in.

A purification system box, also known as a glove box purification system or purification unit, is the heart of an inert atmosphere glove box. It continuously recirculates the gas inside the glove box (usually argon or nitrogen) through columns containing special adsorbents that remove water and oxygen down to levels below 1 ppm. Think of it as a life-support system for your air-sensitive samples.

At TENCAN, we've engineered purification system boxes that are compact, reliable, and easy to regenerate. They integrate seamlessly with both acrylic glove boxes and stainless steel vacuum glove boxes, offering you the flexibility to build the exact environment your process demands.

How Does a Purification System Box Work?

Let's break it down into three simple steps:

1. Circulation

A high-performance fan draws the glove box atmosphere through the purification system box. The gas passes through a dedicated filter (usually a HEPA or pre-filter) to remove any particulates before entering the purification columns.

2. Adsorption & Catalysis

Inside the purification columns, you'll find two types of materials:

  • Molecular sieves (e.g., 3A or 13X) that physically trap water molecules.
  • Copper catalyst or other oxygen-absorbing media that chemically reacts with O₂ to form stable oxides, removing oxygen from the gas stream.

These materials work together to scrub H₂O and O₂ down to <1 ppm each. Some advanced systems also remove solvents, acids, or other trace contaminants.

3. Regeneration

Over time, the adsorbents become saturated. The purification system box has built-in heaters that can bake out the captured water and oxygen by purging with a dry regeneration gas (usually a small amount of inert gas). This restores the columns to full capacity. Typical regeneration cycles last a few hours and can be performed automatically or manually.

With TENCAN's purification system box, you get a smart controller that monitors moisture and oxygen levels in real time, alerts you when regeneration is needed, and even logs historical data for quality audits.

Key Features You Should Know

When evaluating a purification system box, here are the specs that really matter:

ParameterTypical Performance
H₂O level (after purification)<1 ppm (0.5 ppm achievable)
O₂ level (after purification)<1 ppm (0.5 ppm achievable)
Gas circulation flow rate60-120 m³/h (depends on box volume)
Regeneration temperature200-350 °C (programmable)
Regeneration gas consumption<3 Nm³ per cycle
Control interface7-inch color touch screen with PLC
Dimensions (W×D×H)Customizable, typically 600×600×1200 mm

These numbers mean you can work confidently with moisture-sensitive materials like Li metal, Grignard reagents, or air-free catalysts without worrying about contamination.

Applications That Rely on a Purification System Box

🔬 Battery Research & Production

Lithium-ion battery electrodes, solid-state electrolytes, and sodium-ion materials are extremely hygroscopic. A glove box equipped with a purification system box is standard in every battery lab for assembling coin cells, pouch cells, and conducting electrochemical tests.

⚗️ Pharmaceuticals & APIs

Many active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) degrade in moist air. A purification system box provides a stable inert atmosphere for weighing, mixing, and filling air-sensitive drugs.

🧪 Materials Science

From perovskite solar cells to organic electronics, researchers need sub-ppm levels of O₂ and H₂O to achieve reproducible results. TENCAN's purification system box is trusted by top universities and institutes worldwide.

🏭 Powder Processing & Packaging

If you're handling metal powders (titanium, aluminum, magnesium), rare earth oxides, or nano-powders, a purification system box prevents oxidation and ensures consistent product quality.

Choosing the Right Purification System Box

Not all purification systems are created equal. Here's what to consider:

Box Volume & Gas Change Rate

A larger glove box needs a higher flow capacity. TENCAN offers purification system boxes matched to standard glove box sizes: single-station (800 mm), double-station (1200 mm), and custom dimensions.

Material of Construction

The purification system box itself should be made of stainless steel to resist corrosion during regeneration. Ours are 304 stainless steel throughout.

Control & Monitoring

Look for systems that can connect to a computer for data logging, or that have an integrated touch screen. TENCAN's system supports both Ethernet and USB export.

Maintenance & Consumables

Some purification columns are disposable; others are regenerable. TENCAN's columns are regenerable for hundreds of cycles, saving you thousands in replacement costs over the life of the system.

If your application only occasionally requires an inert atmosphere, you might consider a simpler stainless steel vacuum glove box with manual purge. But for continuous, high-integrity work, the purification system box is the way to go.

Why TENCAN Stands Out

As a leading manufacturer of glove box equipment, TENCAN (TENCAN Powder Tech) has been designing purification systems for over a decade. Our systems are built with:

  • German-made quality components (e.g., Pfeiffer vacuum pumps, Brooks mass flow controllers)
  • Rigorous factory testing – every unit is run for 48 hours before shipment
  • Global technical support with fast shipping of spare parts
  • Customizable options: intercom, UV sterilisation lamp, extra ports, and more

We're not just selling a box; we're providing a solution that helps you get reliable, publishable results day after day.
